Drugs Industry in India 2026: Growth, Demand, Challenges and Jobs

I have been looking at the drugs industry in India, and 2026 is very important year. India makes many medicines for people in India and other countries. The industry includes generic drugs, active ingredients, vaccines, specialty drugs and many other types of medicines.

From the research, I feel like industry is changing really fast. Companies are making more products in India. They are also trying to reduce their dependence on imported drug ingredients.

Growth and Demand

The demand for drugs in India is growing.

One reason is the growing population. Another reason is increase in health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. People are also going to hospitals and doctors more. This is increasing the need for medicines.

India’s drug market was around US$60 billion in 2025. Estimates show that it could reach around US$130 billion by 2030. I see this as a strong growth opportunity for drug makers, suppliers and other companies working in this industry.

The global drugs sector  was valued at US$1,688.14 billion in 2025. It is expected to reach US$1,790.05 billion in 2026 and could grow to nearly US$3,034.63 billion by 2035, at a 6.04% CAGR during the period.

Let’s Understand the Real Numbers in 2026

India is also a major drug exporter. India exported drugs worth around US$30.47 billion in FY2024–25. Exports grew by about 9.4% from the previous year.

In FY2026, drug exports crossed US$31 billion.

India also has around 60,000 generic drug brands across different treatment areas. These numbers show that India is not only making drugs for the people leaving in India, but it also supplies medicines to many markets in the world.

What Is Going on in the Industry?

One change I have noticed in 2026 is the focus on local drug production.

India wants to make more drug ingredients inside the country which can help reduce supply problems fast. Companies are also making more complex drugs. These drugs can be harder to make than common generic medicines.

There is also more use of machines, automation and data in drug production. I think technology will become a bigger part of the industry in the next few years.

Challenges and Opportunities

The drugs industry still has some challenges.

Challenges:

  • Drug companies should maintain good quality and follow strict rules.
  • Price pressure makes it difficult for companies to reduce the cost.
  • India is still importing many important drug ingredients from other countries.
  • Global competition is also increasing.
  • Drug makers or producers also need to manage changing demand and supply problems.

Opportunities:

  • India can increase local production of important drug ingredients.
  • Generic drugs will continue to see strong demand.
  • Complex drugs can create new growth areas for Indian companies.
  • Drug exports can grow in future in emerging and developed markets.
  • Vaccines and special drugs can create new opportunities.
  • Clinical research and drug development can create more business opportunities.
  • Good usage of technology can improve drug production and supply chains.

Jobs in the Industry

The drugs industry also supports many jobs in India.

Industry estimates suggest that around 2.7 million people are directly or indirectly connected to the wider Indian pharmaceutical sector.

There are jobs in drug manufacturing, quality testing, research, sales, distribution and supply chain.

There are also growing opportunities in regulatory work, clinical research, data analysis and market research.

From my study, I feel that people with drug industry knowledge and basic digital skills can increase good opportunities in the coming years.

In my view, India’s drugs industry has a strong future. The demand for medicines will continue to grow. Drug exports are also increasing. The bigger opportunity is not only in making more drugs. It is also in making better drugs, important drug ingredients and more advanced products in India.

I believe 2026 can be an important step for India as a major global drug manufacturing and supply market.
